Level 1

I’m a total beginner! This is my first time, I’ve never skied before!

  • Understand the equipment

  • Balance whilst sliding

  • Make a snowlpough shape

Step2.png

Level 2

I can snowplough stop competently on green runs and I’m learning to snowplough turn on green runs.

  •  Get up without help

  • Snowplough traverse

  • Follow instructor tracks, without cutting corners

Step3.png

Level 3

I’m comfortable snowplough turning on green and easy blue runs but keen to learn to parallel turn.

  • Be able to balance on the outer ski

  • Parallel traverse with lower ski gripping

  • Direct side slip. Lower ski across the slope, may catch uphill ski edge

Intermediate

Level 4

I’m starting to venture onto all blue and easy red runs. Confident skiing parallel on these pistes.

  • Direct side slip, controlling both skis simultaneously

  • Ski within a corridor appropriate to the slope

  • Managing your posture on the steeper slopes

Step5.png

Level 5

I’m comfortable skiing on most red runs but would like to improve my technique so that I can comfortably tackle tricky snow conditions, steeper slopes or begin carving.

  • Able to lift inside ski at the fall line to the end of the turn

  • Diagonal side slip by controlling fore and aft movements

  • Starting to roll from edge to edge on green slopes, leaving clean tracks

Level 6

I’m happy skiing on any colour runs. I am keen to improve my technique to perform better on the piste in grippy short turns and carving long turns. Conditions allow I’m interested in off-piste.

  • Ski a narrow corridor controlling speed and line

  • Maintain ski to snow contact at all times

  • Ski a funnel, from short, to medium, to long radius turns.

Level 7

I can ski the whole mountain with confidence on piste and off piste. I am looking to push my technical knowledge and level in different areas such as, on piste, off-piste, moguls and ski touring.

  • Linked turns in easy moguls

  • Understand avalanche danger scale

  • Maintaining good body position in off-piste snow

I am someone who has never tried Cross-country skiing or I have used the equipment but couldn’t work out what I was supposed to be doing

Improver

I have grasped the basics of diagonal stride or skate and the techniques for gentle downhill and uphill slopes.

Advanced

I am comfortable with all techniques and on all terrain but would like to refine some of the techniques. I can wind up the speed and really travel.
